Assistant Curator of Special Collections for Books (Assistant Librarian)
The LSU Libraries' Special Collections division seeks an energetic and
ambitious professional to serve as the Assistant Curator of Special
Collections for Books. Reporting to the Head of Special Collections,
the incumbent will oversee the acquisition, preservation, and
cataloging of published materials for the Louisiana and Lower
Mississippi Valley Collections, and will collaborate with the Head of
Special Collections to develop the Rare Book and McIlhenny Natural
History Collections. The Assistant Curator will also play a key role
in providing outreach and instruction to enhance use of Special
Collections.
Housed in historic Hill Memorial Library, Special Collections
comprises more than 200,000 volumes of published works, 10 million
manuscript items, 200,000 historic photographs, 16,000+ reels of
newspaper microfilm, hundreds of oral histories, and other diverse
materials for research. With a staff of 30 FTE, Special Collections
maintains an active program of collection development, outreach to
on-site and distance users, and inter-disciplinary collaboration with
faculty and students.

Qualifications: Required: Master’s of Library Science from an ALA
accredited school; excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
demonstrated organizational and planning skills; one year of practical
experience in a special collections setting (pre- or post-M.L.S.) in
addition to knowledge (based on course work and/or experience) of best
practices in special collections librarianship.
Preferred: Demonstrated knowledge of and curatorial experience with
rare books and their curatorial issues; knowledge of history of
printed book in West; knowledge of Louisiana history and literature;
reading competency in French and/or Spanish; knowledge of best
practices in preservation of rare books and archival materials;
demonstrated flexibility and initiative; indication of potential for
meeting the University’s promotion and tenure requirements.
