Williams College Libraries seeks candidates for the position of Head of
Collection Development and Acquisitions. This position offers a unique
opportunity to manage a $2.35 million materials budget, to lead collection
initiatives and establish acquisitions policies at a top-ranked liberal
arts college. In collaboration with eleven liaison selectors, this person
will have an exciting role in developing the future of library collections
as the college embarks on the construction of a new integrated library and
technology center and off-site storage facility. The Head of Collection
Development and Acquisitions reports to the College Librarian. This
position is a full-time, 12-month administrative staff position.
Responsibilities:
Prepares and justifies budget requests in conjunction with the College
Librarian. Makes allocations and tracks expenditures for general,
endowment, gift, and grant funds. Evaluates vendor performance and
negotiates with vendors for service fees and sales discounts. Monitors
faculty curricular and research interests and adapts to changes in the
Williams curriculum; oversees purchasing priorities. Coordinates review and
selection of electronic resources. Chairs the Library's Electronic
Resources Group. Negotiates license terms and pricing for electronic
resources and media materials. Participates in the implementation of the
Library's Electronic Resource Management module. As a Boston Library
Consortium collection manager, represents the Williams College Libraries in
frequent collaborative meetings with other BLC counterparts. Participates
in BLC initiatives including the Cooperative Collection Development Working
Group. Supervises five Acquisitions support staff.
Requirements:
MLS degree from ALA-accredited library school with 5 years relevant
experience formulating and tracking budgets; collection development
expertise. Ability to work collaboratively with various campus
constituents. Subject expertise in and understanding of the mission of a
liberal arts college. Supervisory and training experience with knowledge of
scholarly communication and library trends in copyright and licensing.
Knowledge of the publishing market, electronic service providers, serials
vendors and. binding and preservation practices. Expertise in accounting
practices and systems. Demonstrated excellent oral and written
communication skills. Experience with online integrated bibliographic
systems and bibliographic utilities. Familiarity with cataloging standards.
