Fran,

Our policy reflects just that sentiment -- "While hardcover books may
be purchased in order to ensure timely acquisition of new
publications, well-made paperbacks are generally preferred."

Our perspective is that most of our books will (in an honest
evaluation) circulate very rarely -- even our most popular items
aren't circing with such regularity as to become quickly worn -- and
so concerns about the durability of paperbacks are overrated. (I also,
personally, believe that shelving concerns re: paperbacks are
overrated -- we have no problems.) Plus, rebinding costs are low, so
a paperback that needs to be rebound is often still cheaper than the
equivalent hardcover.

Good luck!

Jenica.
