The ACRL New England Chapter Annual Meeting will be held June 1, 2007 at
Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
http://www.acrlnec.org/springconf07/home.shtml

Our theme is: "Space: The Final Frontier".

Is your library struggling with a lack of space?

Are you considering what to do with your journal and other collections?

Are you in need of finding partners for solutions?

Do your space issues impact on numerous divisions within your library?

What are others doing to find alternatives and eoncomically viable
solutions?

Many libraries are struggling to balance core values such as the
preservation and retention of resources with the reality of limited space.

This Spring 2007, the ACRL New England Conference will explore whether/how
we can continue to develop and preserve our collections without
sacrificing
core values.

Our speakers will address potential solutions such as weeding, book
depositories, cooperative collections, virtual collections, and books
and journal articles on demand. In addition, we will address the
leadership
required to implement economically viable solutions
in an increasingly competitive landscape.

We have numerous speakers addressing the issues from a variety of
perspectives, including Paul Gherman, University Librarian at Vanderbilt
University who will speak about the North American Storage Trust: Saving
Space, Preserving Collections, and Brian Lavoie, Consulting Research
Scientist at OCLC who has spoken widely on issues concerning aggregate
collections. As Director of Digital Collections and Archives At Tufts
University, Anne Sauer will bring a fresh perspective to the issues raised
by the morning speakers. Our format for the morning will prove to be
interesting
and stimulating as Anne serves as a first respondent to the first two
speakers.

Linda Oldach, Mount Wachusett Community College will speak on the moving
target of community college library space planning. She will share her
experiences working with diverse groups on campus to create a common
vision
for the library renovation. Gregory Crane, editor in chief of Perseus
Digital Library at Tufts and Greg Pronevitz, from Digital
Commonwealth will
speak on digital space solutions. Leslie Button, Associate Director of
Collection Services, UMass, Amherst;
Steve Hyndman, Regional Manager YBP Library Services; Pat Adams of
Blackwell
Book Services; and Barbara Preece, Executive Director of the Boston
Library
Consortium all will be giving their various perspectives on the process of
cooperative collecting, another alternative for space savings.
