PALINET, Philadelphia, PA
This "basic" workshop will provide an introduction to the components of
collection development and management. It is intended for individuals with
new or expanded responsibilities in CDM. The workshop will introduce and
explore the areas that constitute this core library function: policy,
planning, and fiscal management; collection development (building
collections through selection, approval plans, gifts, etc.); collection
management (decisions about storage, withdrawal, and cancellation);
collection analysis through collection-based and use- and user-based
methods; cooperative collection development; and outreach, liaison
activities, and marketing. Woven through the workshop are themes and trends
that make collection development and management both exciting and
challenging, including ethical considerations, scholarly communication, and
digital content. This is an interactive workshop with individual and group
work, and plenty of time for questions and discussion. At the end of this
workshop you will be able to:
Describe the range of CDM responsibilities and the required skills and
competencies
List the elements in a collection development policy
Write a collection development policy
Explain the importance of collection analysis
Perform one or more types of analysis
Explain outreach and liaison responsibilities and be able to develop a plan
to increase your activities in these areas
