Assistant or Associate Librarian
The Florida State University Libraries seeks an experienced,
enthusiastic and energetic librarian who wants an opportunity to
participate in a wide range of services and professional
responsibilities in a dynamic environment to fill a Subject Specialist
Librarian position within the Collection Development Department. The
Librarian has the responsibility for developing the collections,
services, and providing research consultations, and upper level
instruction. This position works collaboratively with the faculty and
librarians to support instructional programs, information literacy
initiatives, and faculty scholarship.
Subject expertise in one or more of the following areas will be given
consideration:
- Business
- Education
- Human Sciences
- Sciences
- Social Sciences
Specific Duties:
Provide leadership to academic departments and programs in selecting
items to be added to the collection through ?firm? orders and
coordinate the library liaison program for specific subjects.
- Develop, manage, and revise collection development policy statements
for assigned subjects.
- Review gift book collections and makes decisions on items to be
added to the collection.
- Periodically review books being added to the collection through the
Libraries approval plan to determine when the plans need updating.
- Provide quality reference services and research consultation to
patrons in the assigned subject areas.
- Provide information literacy and course-integrated learning
activities to patrons in the assigned subject areas.
- Develop, actively promote, and deliver information literacy
seminars, workshops, and tutorials for the assigned subject areas.
- Promote the use of library resources and services to faculty and
students in the assigned subject areas.
- Develop Web pages, research guides, and other tools that assist
students in the assigned subject in using the library and it resources.
- Consult with faculty, academic researchers, staff and students; and
collaborate with library and teaching faculty on developing new
methods of delivering research assistance and learning activities.
- Serve on Library and/or University committees.
- Contribute to state, regional, and national committees and
participate in research, publication, and other professional and
scholarly activities.
Required Qualifications:
MLS from an ALA-accredited program is required. Bachelor?s degree in
an appropriate subject area with a minimum of two years of academic
library experience as a subject
specialist. Second Master?s degree required in a subject area.
Relevant experience or education, which reflects ability to provide
advanced research assistance in two or more subject areas. Expertise
in assigned subjects sufficient to assess the curricular and research
needs of the University in those areas and expertise to build
collections to meet those needs. Effective oral and written
communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and
to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels and with people of
diverse backgrounds. Flexibility in adapting to changing departmental
and organizational priorities and to ever-changing technological
environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in a subject area is desired; Web authoring skills; Two-three
years minimum Professional Academic library experience as a subject
specialist; Experience working in a Collection Development unit.
SALARY: $48,000.00-$55,000.00, negotiable depending on qualifications.
BENEFITS: This is a full-time, 12-month non-tenured faculty
appointment. Benefits include 22 days vacation, 13 days sick leave.
Group, medical, dental, and life insurance, an optional retirement
program or state retirement, and no state or local income tax. With
supervisor's approval, may qualify for University tuition scholarship
for up to six hours credit each semester.

build a digital library that will enhance scholarly communication
within the Florida State University, the state of Florida, and the
