POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  The Health Sciences and Human Services Library 
(HS/HSL), University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks a knowledgeable, 
energetic, and creative Collection Development Librarian to oversee 
selection of the Library’s print and digital assets, including databases 
and other digital tools.  This librarian reports to the Associate Director 
for Resources.

General – Provides coordination and oversight of all facets of selection of 
the Library’s print and digital assets.  Responsibilities include leading 
the Library-wide collection development committee; leading collection 
evaluation including cost and use studies; leading collection acquisition, 
weeding and cancellation projects; and forecasting collection needs and 
trends.  In collaboration with division librarians, this librarian has a 
key role in planning, organization, and policy development relating to 
Library resources.  This librarian oversees the creation and management of 
statistics and reports related to collection development.  This librarian 
collaborates with others in the Library, the USMAI (University System of 
Maryland and Affiliated Institutions consortium), and the UM, B (University 
of Maryland Baltimore) campus to envision and bring forth special initiatives.

S/he collaborates with division librarians to achieve the Library’s 
resources mission, and collaborates with Library faculty to achieve 
established goals, participates in strategic planning, serves on 
committees, works with colleagues at consortial, regional and national 
levels, and is active in the profession.

Budget - Oversees Library collection budget evaluation by maintaining 
knowledge of all sources of funding for all print and digital assets; 
facilitates information about the collection budget among members of the 
Collection Development Committee, the Services Division liaisons, and the 
Library director.  This librarian works closely with the Resources 
Acquisition and Management Librarian to effectively monitor the collection 
budget.  S/he works directly with the Library director and others to 
achieve a balanced collection within budget allocations, and participates 
in identifying and responding to trends in publishing related to effective 
fiscal management.

Collection Development – Serves as chair of the HS/HSL Collection 
Development Committee, offering an organized approach to collection 
development, maintaining current and relevant policies and procedures, and 
serving in an advisory capacity to Services division librarians in their 
collection development activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
Three to five years professional experience working in a collections role 
in an academic library; including:
    * Collection development experience,
    * Budget knowledge and experience,
    * Leadership skills,
    * Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills,
    * Excellent oral and written communication skills,
    * Knowledge of  current trends in scholarly publishing,
    * Ability to lead library teams in projects relating to 
collection        and budgetary management, and
    * Ability to work in a high-demand environment and effectively multi-task.

Preferred:
    * Collection development experience in an academic health sciences 
library.
    * Experience building positive faculty relationships.
    * Experience with Ex Libris’ Aleph 500 integrated library system.
    * Participation in academic library consortial activities.
    * Involvement in professional activities, in a leadership capacity.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus is located in downtown

periodicals, and 52 databases. Sixty-five FTEs and 25 faculty librarians 
staff the library. Our attractive facility, which opened in 1998, provides 
over 900 seats, 40 group study rooms, 130 individual study-carrels, 60 
public-access computers, wireless Internet access, 3 computer classrooms, 
and a satellite conferencing center. The 190,000 square foot building also 
houses the Tower Café, the HS/HSL coffee lounge.

The Library supports the 5,600 students, 2,045 faculty and staff members on 
UMB's 60-acre research and technology complex of 58 buildings including the 
University of Maryland Medical Center. UMB's professional and graduate 
schools include a dental school, graduate school, and schools of law,
