We didn't study the completeness of this particular package, but we did
quite a bit of checking of JSTOR titles in many subject areas with the
original journals, prior to placing many runs of serials into storage.
I remember very few instances of JSTOR files being incomplete. In one
instance, an Art History journal, some of the art advertisements on the
cover pages of the print journals had not been reproduced in the JSTOR
version, although every single article was there.
Where we encountered problems was in journals that contain black and
white photographs or detailed maps. In quite a few instances, it
seemed to us that the black and white photographs had not reproduced
well, and that the print original was quite a bit superior to the JSTOR
version. On a few occasions, colour photographs or plates had been
rendered in black and white in JSTOR. We found a few instances where
detailed maps, or drawings of that type, had not digitized well and were
definitely better in the print original.
I have a very high regard for JSTOR, but based on our experience and
the collective judgement of those who participated in the evaluation
exercise, it is definitely worth it to examine any form of colour plate,
illustration, map, etc. in both the print and online version, should you
be planning to rely exclusively on the JSTOR for access to the contents
of an article.
I can't remember a single instance where JSTOR had skipped over an
article, book review, or even something very short, and had not
reproduced it.

Have any of you conducted an analysis of the completeness and quality
of
the content of the new Science Classic package compared to the JSTOR
Science backfiles? If so, would you be willing to share the results of
your study? If you already have JSTOR, do you see any reason to
purchase
Science Classic?
