Duties And Responsibilities Reporting to the Senior Rare Book Cataloger,
performs original and complex adaptive cataloging of rare books, serials,
and other printed material from the 15th century to the present in multiple
languages and in multiple formats according to national standards; creates
authority records as needed; participates in the creation and dissemination
of standards, training aids, and other documentation for the Technical
Services Department; participates in creating and implementing new
workflows and projects within the department; provides expertise and
training to other members of the department; assists in evaluating the work
of the Rare Book Cataloging Unit; provides assistance to curators and
Public Services staff in areas of bibliographic expertise; may supervise
student positions, temporary staff and interns.
Required Education, Experience and Skills REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MLS; at
least 3 years of experience, including demonstrated advanced experience
working with rare books in a research library setting; thorough knowledge
of cataloging tools, standards and conventions; facility with at least one
foreign language; advanced written and verbal communication skills;
knowledge of analytical and descriptive bibliography; must be able to work
both independently and collaboratively; must be able to occasionally lift
and/or move up to 30 pounds; must be able to tolerate normal library
allergens.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: German or Russian and/or other Slavic languages
preferred; solid working knowledge of multiple foreign languages is highly
desirable including, but not limited to, French, Spanish, Italian, and
classical languages.
