Director of Collection Development

Central Michigan University Libraries seeks an innovative, 
enthusiastic librarian to lead collection development initiatives and 
programs.   Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries and working 
closely with the Dean of Libraries, the Director of Collection 
Development leads library collection development and scholarly 
communications initiatives at Central Michigan University. As part of 
the Dean’s Advisory Council, the Director of Collection Development 
participates, as well, in general leadership and decision-making in 
the CMU Libraries.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Collection Development (DCD) manages a $3.6+ million 
acquisitions budget and is responsible for aligning the budget with 
current and emerging academic programs and trends in the publishing 
industry. The successful candidate will lead a collection development 
team of 15 bibliographer/liaisons to assess the current collection and 
anticipate future collection needs; and will communicate with academic 
senior staff about collection development issues.  The DCD will 
develop and lead scholarly communications initiatives and will employ 
strategies to ensure a collection development program that reflects 
the academic needs of a 21st century university.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in library and information science from an 
ALA-accredited program; at least four years collection development 
experience in academic or large public libraries;  at least two years 
professional experience in academic libraries; effective team 
leadership experience; budgeting experience; understanding of trends 
in scholarly communication; excellent interpersonal and written 
communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with 
library constituencies and staff .

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional advanced degree; supervisory experience; record of success 
in innovation of library services; strong record of professional 
activity in areas related to responsibilities; project management 
skills; reference experience; library technology experience.

Salary commensurate with qualifications, minimum $60,000.  Competitive 
benefits.  This is a professional administrative position.
