Collections and Scholarly Communications Library Director

The Wayne State University Library System is seeking a dynamic,
creative leader who will manage communication and policy development
related to collections and scholarship. Reporting to the Dean of the
University Library System, the Library Director will manage the
library system’s $ 7 million collection development budget and oversee
resource allocation plans that support the library’s strategic vision.
This newly defined position will: Work collaboratively with university
faculty and librarians to develop collection development policies,
procedures and evaluation strategies that support the library’s
strategic vision and mission; work in partnership with other library
directors to assure that resource allocation decisions are aligned
with library strategic direction; develop and analyze resource usage
data to support effective collection development decisions; facilitate
and promote access to the Wayne State University institutional
repository as the publication platform for sharing and preservation of
the unique contributions of faculty scholarship, teaching and
research; implement long term strategies for the preservation of
digital content; develop and implement local policies and projects for
selection and management of special collections and gifts; further
develop and expand partnerships and consortial projects and
cooperative purchases; lead The University Libraries
’ response to scholarly communications initiatives including open
access, digital publishing, and electronic resource licensing; work
with university partners to develop and manage a campus-wide approach
to intellectual property management.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a masters degree in
library science from an ALA accredited program, five years of
experience in management of academic library collections or equivalent
experience, demonstrated evidence of an understanding of the impact of
electronic resource delivery; experience in effective planning and
budgeting for collections in a complex library environment;
understanding of trends in the scholarly publishing industry;
demonstrated experience with team-based leadership and decision making
approaches; an understanding of the issues and trends involved with
contract negotiation for licensing of print and electronic resources;
a strong commitment to fostering the growth and development of other;
and superior oral, interpersonal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: An advanced degree in a relevant discipline;
experience with consortial planning for collection development; and a
strong record of professional activity.
