COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN

Lydia M. Olson Library at Northern Michigan University seeks applicants 
for Collection Development Librarian. We seek a versatile, dynamic 
librarian to lead a collection development program responsive to the 
needs of the University community. NMU is a high-tech campus and the 
first public university in Michigan to embark on a “laptop campus” 
initiative.

The Collection Development Librarian provides leadership in articulating 
the direction and balance of collections, formulating collection 
policies, managing the budget for resources, and evaluating the use of 
library resources. This librarian is actively involved in vendor 
relations, negotiates pricing and licensing agreements, and keeps 
abreast of developments in publishing and scholarly communications. 
Under the Dean of Academic Information Services, the Collection 
Development Librarian coordinates the selection activity of liaison 
librarians, serves as liaison to selected academic programs, and 
coordinates cooperative collection development with other libraries, 
consortia and statewide initiatives.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited master’s degree; minimum 2 years 
substantial collection development experience in an academic library; 
thorough knowledge of trends and issues in academic collection 
development; proficiency in financial management; ability to work 
effectively and cooperatively in a collaborative, interdepartmental 
environment; awareness of current trends in publishing, best practices 
in licensing, and digital library initiatives; effective oral and 
written communication skills; assessment and analytical skill, 
problem-solving ability, and ability to prioritize multiple projects. A 
second master’s degree or higher is desirable.

This is a full-time, twelve-month tenure track faculty appointment at 
the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Salary and benefits are 
competitive. Rank and salary commensurate with experience and
