Columbia University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the 
position of Head, Monographs Acquisitions Services Department (MAS). We 
seek an experienced acquisitions librarian to manage the department (3 
Library Specialists, 13 support staff), which provides acquisitions 
services for all approval and firm order materials, gifts and exchange 
material for 25 library sites. Materials in all formats are included. 
Columbia University Libraries acquires and processes monographic materials 
centrally. In addition, one of the units in MAS serves as an Accounts 
Payable unit within the University, i.e. MAS is responsible for entering & 
approving invoices into the University's system, cutting the checks and 
sending them to the vendor. All records are maintained in the Libraries 
online system, CLIO.

*Reporting to the Director, Technical Support & Acquisitions Division the 
Head of MAS will be expected to: *

    * Administer and manage activities pertaining to technical services
      aspects of monographs acquisitions in all formats, including
      vendor selection and performance; invoice preparation and payment
      in University's accounting system; monitoring workflow; and,
      communicating with vendors about orders, terms, claims, payments,
      and other performance matters. This includes assigning areas of
      work, determining workflow and procedures, monitoring quantity and
      quality of work, analyzing and resolving problems, developing and
      using statistical and other management reports.

    * The incumbent is expected to handle problem resolution with firm
      orders and approval plans. The Head of MAS serves as Columbia's
      primary expert in the methods of acquiring and processing
      monographic materials.**

    * Columbia University Libraries is devoting about 35% of its budget
      to acquiring material handled by Monographs Acquisitions Services.
      The incumbent will be expected to work with peers and members of
      the Library Administration to streamline the process for acquiring
      and providing access to incoming materials. This will include
      working with the Library Systems Office, vendors, publishers and
      other services to obtain the best terms and conditions available.

*Requirements are:* an accredited MLS, or equivalent relevant monographic 
experience; previous serials or acquisitions experience at a professional 
level; knowledge of acquisitions librarianship, bibliographic records, and 
library automation; knowledge of business practices and the ability to 
apply that knowledge to established fiscal procedures; ability to work in a 
large, complex and changing library environment; effective written and oral 
communication skills; managerial and analytical skills; sound judgment; 
strong supervisory skills; working knowledge of one or more European 
languages (preferably one Romance and one Germanic) including the ability 
to understand general business terms. Experience with OCLC and/or RLIN, and 
experience in a large research library, and familiarity with EDI invoicing 
are desirable.
