Greetings,
Please allow us to introduce ourselves. We are Jack Montgomery and Roxanne
Spencer of Western Kentucky University Libraries. We have recently been
working on a Challenged Materials Policy and wonder if any of you would
mind sharing some thoughts, experiences and ideas with us regarding this
subject. We organized what we need to know into questions.

1. In what type of library do you work?
a. academic
b. public
c. special

2. Does your library have a Collection development policy?
3. If you do, does that policy address challenged materials?
4. Do you have a process for reconsideration in the case of challenged
materials?
5. Is your process informal or formal?
6. Would you tell us the steps you employ to resolve such issues?
7. How challenges to materials are usually resolved? Do you usually:
a. Withdraw the item that has been challenged?
b. Return it to the shelf?
c. Place it in some secure area?

8. We'd really appreciate any experiences, ideas or thoughts you may wish
to share and we promise to keep your answers in strict confidence.

We do need the answers by next Friday, September 22nd.

Many thanks in advance. Jack Montgomery, Collection Services Coordinator
