Head, Chemistry Library
The University of Arkansas Libraries seek dynamic, service-oriented
candidates for the position of Head, Chemistry Library. Reporting to the
Director for Public Services, the successful candidate will provide
leadership for planning and implementing innovative services and will
manage the daily operations of the Chemistry Library. The Chemistry
Library, newly renovated, provides services that meet the information,
instruction, and research needs of the Chemistry and Biochemistry
Department faculty and students as well as the campus
community. Responsibilities include chemistry and general science
reference and instruction; collaborative collection development and
management; supervision of one full-time staff member, one graduate
assistant, and other student staff; cooperation with other public service
units to ensure that service standards are met; and liaison activities with
the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. The Head participates in
Library Cabinet and other m
eetings, prepares reports, and contributes to the overall goals of the
University Libraries.
Qualifications. Required: American Library Association (ALA) accredited
master’s degree or a graduate degree in chemistry; three years of work
experience in an academic or research library; supervisory and management
experience; demonstrated knowledge of resources in chemistry and related
science disciplines; excellent interpersonal skills; and the potential to
meet promotion and tenure requirements in performance, scholarship, and
service. Preferred: Collection development experience and demonstrated
ability to work collaboratively; bibliographic instruction experience;
knowledge of emerging technologies used in the delivery of information
services.
Salary and Benefits. Salary and rank dependent on
qualifications. Tenure-track, twelve-month appointment. Minimum salary:
$45,000. Benefits include TIAA/CREF and/or Fidelity, 22 days of annual
leave, tuition reduction, health and dental insurance.
Background. Supported by major gifts received through the Campaign for the
21st Century, University goals include increasing enrollment by several
thousand students; establishing new academic programs, especially in the
Honors College and Graduate School; and increasing research across the
curriculum. In concert with these goals, the Libraries have identified
strategic initiatives to meet increasing expectations of students and
faculty in this growth environment, including innovations within the
Libraries; activities to support the University’s land-grant teaching and
research mission; and dedication, cooperation, and flexibility among personnel.
The University Libraries hold over 1.7 million volumes. The Libraries
participate in the Greater Western Library Alliance. Library personnel
(FTE) include 32 library faculty, 80 professional and support staff, 3
library graduate assistants, and 29 student assistants. The Chemistry

University Libraries, supports the Department of Chemistry and

which is a part of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. Three
research centersCenter for Protein Structure and Function, Center for
Sensing Technology and Research, and Arkansas Center for Space and
Planetary Sciencesare located in this department, which offers bachelor’s,
master’s and doctoral degrees. The Chemistry Library collections include
traditional print and electronic resources in chemistry and related
