Subject: Collection Development & Intellectual Freedom Program at ALA
Annual Conference From:"Robert P. Holley" <aa3805_at_wayne.edu>

“Vanilla Collections: Have Alternative Viewpoints Disappeared from
Academic Libraries?”
June 24, 2006, 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Rhythms Ballroom I/II
Sponsored by the ACRL Intellectual Freedom Committee

Intellectual freedom advocates worry that academic libraries are
creating homogenous, vanilla-flavored collections that no longer pay
enough attention to alternative viewpoints. Lack of time and money for
individual selection has led to an increasing reliance upon approval
plans, standing orders, and pre-approved choices. Have
independent-minded selectors who look beyond the standard reviewing
sources and media outlets disappeared? Are alternative materials
easily available if libraries want to buy them? Or do the facts show
that this is not a real issue?

The program will feature three speakers:

Charles Willett, founding editor of Counterpoise and distributor of
alternative press materials
Bob Nardini, Senior Vice President and Head Bibliographer, Yankee Book
Peddler
Bart Harloe, University Librarian, St. Lawrence University

The speakers promise a lively discussion of the topic. There will be
ample time for questions or comments from the audience.
