Position opening--Widener Library, Harvard University

PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
English Bibliographer for the Humanities

The incumbent is responsible for building the Widener Library's 
collection of non-Americanist English-language materials in the 
humanities, and providing specialized services to patrons.  Serves as 
Widener's primary selector for English-language materials published in 
the U.S. (excluding Americanist resources) in literature, philosophy, 
classics, linguistics, religion, folklore, performing and fine arts, 
film studies, library science, and general reference.  Also selects 
humanities materials published in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, 
New Zealand, Ireland, and Oceania. Provides specialized reference and 
instructional services to students and faculty. Is responsible for 
effective use of funds. Reviews acquisitions and collections for 
preservation and storage decisions.  Develops and maintains a written 
collection development policy. Works closely with library units, 
faculty, and students to develop collections
that support research and teaching.  Participates in national 
initiatives related to collections and bibliographic resources.


Qualifications:

MLS and an advanced degree in a humanistic discipline, or equivalent
combination of relevant education and experience.  Demonstrated 
ability in collection development in a research library.  Working 
knowledge of research trends and the scholarly process. Expertise in 
U.S. and British publishing and the book trade of the English speaking 
world, including non-print resources.  Knowledge of French essential. 
  Knowledge of other West European languages desirable.  Experience 
with on-line integrated library catalogs, Aleph, MS Office (Word, 
Excel, Access), and Internet applications required.  Experience with 
electronic databases highly desirable. Excellent communication and 
interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team. 
Flexibility and versatility required. Involvement in professional and 
scholarly organizations expected.
