Director of Collection Development
Central Michigan University


Central Michigan University Libraries seeks an innovative, 
enthusiastic librarian to lead collection development initiatives and 
programs.  Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries and working 
closely with the Dean of Libraries, the Director of Collection 
Development leads library collection development and scholarly 
communication initiatives at Central Michigan University.  As part of 
the Dean’s Advisory Council, the Director of Collection Development 
participates in leadership and decision-making in the CMU Libraries.

The Director of Collection Development provides leadership for the 
Libraries’ collection development, liaison, and scholarly 
communication initiatives; initiates and guides planning for 
collection development activities,  including assessing and planning 
for the impact of technology on collection building, access, and 
archiving; provides leadership and supervision to a team of 15 
part-time bibliographers; administers approval plan profiling; manages 
an acquisitions budget of more than $3.5 million; and in conjunction 
with the Head of Technical Services, coordinates new product trials 
and maintains vendor relationships and licensing.

Serving about 28,000 students, Central Michigan University is an 
innovative doctoral/research-intensive institution recognized for 
strong undergraduate education and a range of focused graduate 
programs and research.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in library and information science from an 
ALA-accredited program; at least 5 years of increasingly responsible 
experience in collection development in academic libraries or closely 
related library experience; evidence of effective leadership ability; 
understanding of trends in scholarly communication and the publishing 
industry; experience in effective planning and budgeting for library 
collection development; excellent interpersonal and written 
communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with 
faculty and staff campus-wide.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional advanced degree; supervisory experience in an academic 
library; strong record of professional activity in areas related to 
responsibilities; demonstrated ability to foster teamwork; reference 
experience; library technology experience.
