*CURATOR, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS *
Lehigh University seeks a creative and service-oriented librarian to
provide vision and leadership for Special Collections. Lehigh’s
Special Collections encompasses a rare book collection of over
25,000 volumes, with first editions of English and American
literature from the 17th to the 19th centuries, strengths in
travel and exploration, natural history and ornithology, and works
of historical significance in science and technology. The
collection includes manuscripts, as well as publications and
photographs recording the University's history.
The Curator of Special Collections is responsible for developing,
preserving and conserving collections; liaison with faculty for
research and course needs; public service; involvement in digital
projects (see http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/), contributing content
and metadata; systematic publicizing of the collection; preparing
physical and virtual exhibits; and documenting the collection through
cataloging, finding aids, specialized databases, and a creative Web
presence. The position reports to the Director, Library Collections
and Systems, and provides general supervision for one professional
staff member.
Qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited program, including formal
coursework or training in special collections librarianship; second
advanced degree (MA or PhD); 3-5 years of experience in the special
collections field; knowledge of current trends in special collections;
experience with digital library projects; excellent written, verbal
and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work in a team
environment; ability to work with donors; excellent public service
skills; experience with the antiquarian book trade; computing skills,
including web authoring and database management; knowledge of French
or German desirable.
