DIGITAL INITIATIVES LIBRARIAN
The University of Louisville (UofL) seeks an energetic and innovative
librarian to fill a newly-created appointment as Digital Initiatives
Librarian. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collections,
Preservation & Digital Initiatives, the Digital Initiatives Librarian
will have the opportunity to define this position and to play a major
role in the development of digital initiatives in the University
Libraries. Under the leadership of the Dean, University Libraries
(1999 ACRL Academic Librarian of the Year), the Libraries are the most
recent member of the Association of Research Libraries. UofL is

Responsibilities: The Digital Initiatives Librarian's primary
responsibilities will be to digitize special collections and other
library resources and to coordinate similar efforts undertaken by
other library personnel. Other duties will include managing and
preserving the digital collections and developing quality control
mechanisms; developing shared standards and procedures for all digital
projects conducted in the various University Libraries; and
collaborating with units and organizations outside the Libraries and
University, including collaboration on grant-writing to support
digital initiatives. The position may also plan and implement an
institutional digital repository, and will be expected to stay current
with trends and issues in digitization.
The Digital Initiatives Librarian will work closely with faculty and
staff in Special Collections (Rare Books and Photographic Archives),
University Archives & Records Center (UARC) and Technical Services in
Ekstrom (general) Library. As the position develops, the Digital
Initiatives Librarian will also work with faculty and staff from the
other libraries (Art, Music, and Kornhauser Health Sciences).
Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited
program; minimum two years experience working with digital
collections; experience creating, capturing, and processing images in
a variety of digital formats; working knowledge of digital image file
formats and software, such as Adobe Photoshop, PDF, TIF, WAV, etc.;
knowledge of metadata standards (particularly Dublin Core, but others
such as METS and EAD would be helpful); experience with digital asset
management systems, such as DSpace or CONTENTdm; knowledge of issues
related to long-term preservation of digital content; knowledge of
library preservation issues and handling rare and fragile materials;
knowledge of copyright issues affecting digitization efforts;
excellent organizational skills, competence in written and oral
communication, and ability to work effectively in a group environment.
Desirable Qualifications: Grant writing and resource development
experience; demonstrated ability to manage technical projects;
knowledge of HTML and XML; knowledge of Perl, PHP, or SQL; supervisory
experience; experience working in an academic library.
The appointment rank and salary will commensurate with qualifications.
The annual minimum salary is $35,000 with a comprehensive benefits
package. Library faculty appointments are tenure-track positions.
