Sorry to chime in late on this one, but we are just now starting to
work with the non-profit Better World Books. They send us boxes and
tape and cover shipping costs for our unwanted books. They, they have
this slick automated process that sells the books online. Some
portion of the sales goes to cover the operating costs of BWB, a
portion goes to support a literacy effort of your choice (ours is
Books for Africa) and then the rest (I think 20%) comes back to us.
It is quite an impressive operation.

(See: http://www.betterworldbooks.com/Programs/Library.aspx)

We feel that this option really gives us all that we need. It feels
good to us and to those who give us books to send things to BWB. We
know the books do not end up in a landfill. The effort is minimal
(unlike a book sale) and we don't get books coming back to us that we
offer for free to the community. And, we may even make a little
money. A win-win all around.
