The Libraries of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) seek

Responsibilities of the Position
The librarian will provide reference, instruction and outreach, and
build interdisciplinary collections for the areas of Sociology, Ethnic
Studies and Gender Studies, with liaison responsibility to faculty and
programs in these disciplines. The librarian will work in partnership
with other librarians to build interdisciplinary collections and
services to meet the needs of University of California San Diego's
programs in the social sciences and humanities.
Under the direction of the Head of Reference, Instruction and Outreach,
the incumbent will serve as the library liaison to the Departments of
Sociology (http://sociology.ucsd.edu/) and Ethnic Studies
(http://www.ethnicstudies.ucsd.edu/), and the Critical Gender Studies
program (http://cgs.ucsd.edu) with responsibilities for instruction,
in-depth reference service, and consultations to faculty, students, and
staff. Develop and manage the collections for sociology, ethnic
studies, gender studies and other related collections as assigned.
Provide general reference assistance virtually and at a combined social
sciences, humanities, government information, and maps reference desk.
Some evening and weekend reference hours required. Participate in user
outreach and instructional programs. Provide training opportunities for
UCSD Libraries colleagues to learn about the resources and services for
relevant subject areas. Provide assistance and support in evaluating
digital resources and coordinating consortial purchasing efforts for the
UC Libraries system. Work with UCSD and UC librarians on library related
issues, such as reference, instruction, development of interdisciplinary
collections, and collaborate on collection development issues. Work
with other UC campuses in collaborative collection development efforts.
Represent the UCSD Libraries at pertinent meetings and conferences.
UCSD librarians are expected to participate in library-wide and
system-wide planning and governance, and to be professionally active.
Required Qualifications
Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree
or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library
services.
Minimum of one year of experience in reference service in the social
sciences.
Demonstrated knowledge of print and electronic social sciences
resources and the ability to use technology in the delivery of services.
Knowledge of the discipline and research processes for sociology,
ethnic studies, gender studies or a related social sciences discipline.
Experience in instruction and knowledge of information literacy
concepts.
Knowledge of collection development and management principles.
Demonstrated commitment to public service.
Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills.
Experience in working effectively with faculty and students and an
understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences.
Familiarity with the academic environment and issues facing students
and faculty in a changing information environment.
Evidence of research and/or professional activities.
Ability to work independently and collegially on committees.
Consideration will be given to new graduates of library or information
science programs.
Desirable Qualifications
A degree in sociology, ethnic studies, gender studies, or related
discipline.
Experience in an academic library.
Knowledge of statistical sources and government information resources.
Experience in collection development/management in the social sciences.
Ability to read and/or speak Spanish.
