Central Michigan University’s Clarke Historical Library seeks a 
reference librarian/bibliographer to join an energetic team.  Serving 
about 28,000 students, Central Michigan University is an innovative 
doctoral/research-intensive institution recognized for strong 
undergraduate education and a range of focused graduate programs and 
research.

Position Description:
The Clarke Historical Library, a special collections library at CMU 
specializing in Michigan history, CMU history, Native Americans, other 
Michigan related topics and children’s literature, seeks qualified 
applicants for the position of  Reference Librarian/Bibliographer. 
This is a tenure-track, faculty position.   The successful candidate 
will be an enthusiastic, service-oriented librarian dedicated to the 
provision of outstanding reference and research service and committed 
to the development of electronic as well as print collections. 
Primary responsibilities include: reference and research services, 
bibliographic duties, and supervision of the reading room. Other 
duties include providing library instruction and outreach, and 
collection development.

Minimum Qualifications:
MLS from an ALA accredited program. Evidence of potential for earning 
tenure/promotion as a library faculty member. Evidence of teaching 
ability/potential. Knowledge of a wide variety of relevant electronic 
and print reference resources. Excellent communication and 
interpersonal skills as well as enthusiasm for service excellence. 
Ability to work independently and cooperatively. Potential for 
professional leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience in special collections libraries. Reference 
experience in an academic library, especially in a special collections 
setting.  Expertise in history, especially Michigan history. 
Expertise in children’s literature and historical elementary school 
textbooks. Publications, particularly refereed publications. 
Experience with web page content development and technology-based 
instruction. Supervisory, collection development, and exhibit 
preparation experience.  Additional graduate degree in a field related 
to the position.

Salary commensurate with qualifications, minimum $45,000. Excellent 
fringe benefits.
