The Libraries of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) seek
applications from highly motivated, creative, and experienced library
professionals to join an enthusiastic staff in supporting excellence
in a research library of a rapidly growing highly ranked university.
Responsibilities of the Position
Reporting to the University Librarian, provides leadership for all
activities associated with collections-related services, including
acquisitions, cataloging and metadata creation, serials management,
electronic resources contract licensing, preservation, print and
digital collections building, and the Libraries collection budget.
Assumes administrative responsibility for the staff and services of
the Libraries’ Collection Services departments (Acquisitions, Catalog,
Preservation). Indirect reporting lines consist of approximately 85
staff in a variety of classifications. Also, provides administrative
leadership to the California Digital Library Shared Acquisitions and
Cataloging units, which are located at UCSD, and to UCSD librarians
who hold collection management responsibilities.
Serves as Chair of the UCSD Libraries Collection Monitoring Group, a
five-person team that oversees the total annual collections budget of
$8 million. Forges collaborations and represents the UCSD Libraries
on collection services issues to external audiences at various levels.
Serves on the University of California system-wide Collection
Development Committee and on the Heads of Technical Services
Committee. Actively participates in the University of California
system as it explores new strategies for bibliographic services, new
ways to strengthen collaborative collection development, and new
approaches to shared collections building.
As a member of the Libraries’ senior management team, collaborates on
library-wide planning initiatives, program development, policy
development, and resource allocation that support the services and
organization of the UCSD Libraries. Provides direction for
grant-funded and other projects as appropriate.
Required Qualifications
Professional degree from a library school or other appropriate degree
or equivalent experience in one or more fields relevant to library
services. Substantial supervisory experience in progressively more
responsible academic library positions. Substantial, recent
experience with and knowledge of trends and issues in technical and
collections services. Strong leadership capabilities and experience
in managing and developing print and digital library collections..
Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that
capacity in others. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
