Head of the Basque Studies Library

The University of Nevada, Reno seeks a librarian with a strong
commitment to public service to manage its internationally-known Basque
Studies Library. This is a tenure-track library faculty position
reporting to the Director of Research Services.

Responsibilities:
Establishes goals, priorities, and policies for the Basque Studies
Library. Develops, promotes, and delivers customized library services
based on knowledge of Basque information resources.  Provides in-depth
research assistance to on-campus users, including visiting researchers
from the Basque country and around the world, and remote users. Works
closely with the university's Center for Basque Studies to determine
their information needs. Articulates library goals, policies, and
service objectives to staff, the university community, and other
clientele. Directly supervises one 1.0 FTE staff position and .5 FTE
student assistant(s).

Develops, maintains and promotes self-contained library collections in
all formats including audio, video, and electronic materials, posters,
slides, photographs, archival materials, and ephemera as well as print
monographs and serials. Develops and maintains relationships with
international vendors that supply Basque-related materials. Develops and
maintains contacts with other libraries in the Basque country.  Works
with library staff and faculty in other units to acquire, process,
digitize, and describe materials. Responsible for maintaining the Basque
library Web pages and the Basque Studies Database.

Actively seeks and evaluates grants and other funding opportunities in
light of library needs and participates in the grant application
process. Directs or co-directs funded projects. Participates in
library-wide planning and governance. Engages in research, publication
and service activities to meet requirements for promotion and tenure.

Qualifications:
Required: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent international degree in
library science; two years of professional-level library experience;
ability to communicate orally and in writing with users, vendors,
project partners and co-workers in English and Spanish; a strong
commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services; web
development skills and knowledge of emerging technologies; excellent
interpersonal skills; potential to meet requirements for UNR tenure and
promotion. Preferred: Knowledge of Basque language and culture;
knowledge of French; supervisory experience.

Compensation:
Salary range $43,651-$67,156; depends on experience. TIAA/CREF and other
retirement options; 24 vacation days per year; generous sick leave. No
state income tax or FICA. Tuition benefits for self and family.

Library, Campus and Local Environment:
The Basque Studies Library at the University of Nevada, Reno houses the
largest collection of Basque-related materials outside the Basque
Country, with approximately 47,300 volumes and 1,500 journal titles.
Begun in the 1960s as a component of the Center for Basque Studies of
the University of Nevada, Reno, it is now part of the University
Libraries. The Center for Basque Studies, an active research group,
occupies adjoining space in the main library. The Center for Basque
Studies and the Basque Studies Library will share an area in a new
facility, the Mathewson/IGT Knowledge Center, to be completed in 2008.
The library has recently compiled a Basque Studies Database, funded by
the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The University of Nevada, Reno is the land-grant university and major
research institution in the state with a student body of 15,000. The
University's main campus is in Reno, a metropolitan area of 334,000, on
the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, minutes from
California and 38 miles from Lake Tahoe. Reno is a community noted for
its arts and festivals as well as outdoor recreational opportunities.
