Irish Studies Librarian

The Hesburgh Libraries of the University of Notre Dame seek a dynamic,
innovative, subject librarian to lead the development of our Irish
Studies collections.
Responsibilities: The Irish Studies Librarian is responsible for the
development of a collection poised to become a distinguished
collection of primary, secondary, and creative works in Irish Studies
including, but not limited to history, political science, and Irish
language and literature. Reflecting University and Libraries
priorities, this encompasses selection, cataloging, and especially
communication with the faculty. The Irish Studies Librarian is
responsible for the support of scholarly collections initiatives,
cooperative inter institutional programs and services, and cultivation
of effective working relationships with relevant publishers, vendors
and antiquarian book dealers. Significant financial resources are
available to carry out these responsibilities.
The Irish Studies Librarian:
• Works closely with faculty and serves as the library liaison for
specific departments and programs.
• Provides advanced reference and instruction for Irish studies
courses and programs.
• Develops specific services to support undergraduate and graduate
teaching and advanced research programs, including capstone senior
research projects.
• Provides professional support for the Irish language collections
with an initial division of time of 60% collection development, vendor
evaluation, and related collections activities, and 40 % in direct
support of cataloging, including subject analysis, establishing
priorities for processing, and resolving complex name authority and
classification issues. Subsequently, time allocation will depend on
the nature of the collections acquired, the collection content, and
the frequency of advanced instruction and research support for Irish
Studies.
• Furthers the Libraries’ national and international aspirations in
Irish Studies collections and services.
As a Libraries faculty member, the Irish Studies Librarian
participates in broader management and planning activities of the
University Libraries through participation in appropriate committees,
task forces and working groups. This librarian may serve on College or
University committees when appropriate. Also participates in relevant
local, national, and international library and Irish Studies
organizations.
The Irish Studies Librarian in the Resources and Collection Services
Division and reports to the Head, Collection Development Department.
REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a Master’s degree from an ALA
accredited library program, or equivalent, and a minimum of two years
of professional experience in a research library or equivalent. Must
have proficiency in Irish language adequate for materials selection
and subject analysis and problem resolution in support of cataloging .
Must have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication
English language skills, as well as the proven ability to work
effectively with groups, to build consensus, and participate
effectively in a professional and collegial work environment.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Librarians are non-tenure track members of the
Library faculty and earn 20 days vacation annually. The University
offers an excellent benefits package. Minimum starting salary $37,000
USD. Appointment salary and rank are competitive, commensurate with
experience and qualifications.
ENVIRONMENT: The University of Notre Dame is a national Catholic
teaching and research university enriched with a diversified faculty,
located in northern Indiana ninety miles from Chicago. On a highly
residential campus, approximately 8,200 undergraduate and 3,100
graduate students pursue a broad range of studies. The University
Libraries house over 2.6 million volumes within the main Hesburgh
Library and seven branch libraries and currently subscribe to nearly
17,000 serials. The Libraries have a dynamic staff of 198 including 48
librarians.
