The University of Kansas Libraries invite applications from beginning or 
experienced librarians for the position of Social Sciences Librarian. The 
Social Sciences Librarian will be responsible for providing high-quality, 
innovative liaison, instruction, and collection development services in one 
or more social sciences disciplines. The successful candidate will 
collaborate closely with other social science librarians and will serve on 
the Social Sciences Council, one of four subject-based councils that 
coordinate information, instructional, outreach, and collection development 
services for liaison programs and departments. He/she will also provide 
public services to a diverse community of faculty, staff, and student users 
of the Watson and Anschutz libraries as part of a tiered reference service 
and a campus-wide information literacy instruction program. Librarians at

their professional performance in areas
  including reference, instruction, outreach, and collection development.

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: 12-month, tenure-track appointment, available immediately.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Social Sciences Librarian has outreach, instruction, 
and collection development responsibilities for one or more areas of the 
social sciences. The successful candidate will participate in a campus-wide 
information literacy instruction program serving students in 
first-year-experience programs, general education courses, and advanced 
courses in liaison disciplines. He/she will share responsibility for 
providing information services in person, by telephone, and electronically 
as part of a tiered service model and as part of collaborative digital 
reference programs. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A graduate degree accredited by the American 
Library Association; demonstrated active interest in a social science 
discipline and willingness to become familiar with the concepts and 
research and scholarly communication trends relevant to assigned liaison 
programs, departments, or disciplines; demonstrated knowledge of 
information resources pertinent to the social sciences; familiarity with 
new technologies and their applications for information and instructional 
services; evidence of commitment to innovative and effective user-centered 
services; excellent oral written and presentation skills; demonstrated 
initiative and ability to work effectively as part of a team in a rapidly 
changing environment; evidence of potential to meet requirements for 
research and creative achievement for tenure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Academic background in a social science 
discipline other than Education; experience providing public services in an 
academic library; recent experience in teaching, library instruction, or 
technology training; demonstrated knowledge of trends and practices in 
scholarly communication; reference and collection management experience.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: This is a tenure-track, library faculty appointment. 
Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of the University 
faculty and are appointed to the ranks of Librarian I, Librarian II, or 
Librarian III, dependent on professional experience in the field of 
librarianship. Librarians participate in the Library Faculty Assembly and 
are members of the University Faculty Council. Librarians are evaluated 
annually first and foremost on the performance of professional 
responsibilities. In addition, librarians are expected to participate in, 
and are evaluated on, research, and service to the Libraries, the 
University, and the profession. Both the Libraries and the University offer 
a variety of opportunities for professional development, including 
eligibility for new faculty grants and financial support for research and 
travel.

ANNUAL SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive salary commensurate with experience 
and qualifications. Benefits include 22 days vacation and 12 days sick 
leave per year; several paid holidays; group health and life insurance 
options; choice of four retirement programs, eligibility for sabbatical leave.
