Kristin Antelman, Associate Director for Information Technology, North
Carolina Sate University, Raleigh, has won the 2004 "Best of LRTS Award"
for her article, "Identifying the Serial Work as a Bibliographic Entity."
Ms. Antelman's article was published in the October issue of Library
Resources & Technical Services (vol. 48, no. 4, pp. 238-55).

The Best of LRTS Award is given to the author(s) of the best paper
published each year in LRTS, the official Journal of ALCTS. The author
receives $250 and a citation in recognition of the achievement.

Ms. Antelman has made an original, timely, and important contribution to
the body of knowledge on bibliographic control and identification of
serials. There has been little published about how FRBR (Functional
Requirements for Bibliographic Records) applies to serials. The article
makes a new contribution to the literature by demonstrating how application
of FRBR principles can solve a problem of increasing urgency in the age of
electronic journals and aggregators: how to uniquely identify the serial
"work" and its relationships to other serial entities. Ms. Antelman keeps
her eye clearly on the needs and behavior of the networked user in arguing
for a reconsideration of how serials are identified. Ms. Antelman expertly
builds on the cataloging principles and theories of the past and the
current capabilities of the networked environment to make a cohesive case
for a changed approach to our bibliographic control of serials. The article
will be heavily cited and stand historically as a major contribution to
meeting the timeless principle of collocation in the digital age.

Kristin Antelman received her BA from the University of Michigan, MA in
Political Science from Columbia University, and MA in Library Science from
the University of Chicago. She worked as a systems librarian at the
University of Delaware and the University of Arizona Health Sciences
Library before joining the NCSU Libraries in 2002. She is a member of
ALCTS, LITA and ACRL and is currently serving on the LITA Board as a
Director-at-Large.
