         I kept looking and found this article:

Wall, C. Inventory: what you might expect to be missing. Library &
Archival Security v. 7 (Summer 1985) p. 27-31.

         The article talks about a survey of 104 academic libraries of
all sizes, and the average loss rate ended up being .9% per year. The
use of a security system didn't seem to have a significant effect - the
numbers were all over the board.
