   Associate Director for Content Management

   The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences at the University of
   Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking applications for an innovative
   and experienced librarian and administrator to provide dynamic
   leadership as Associate Director for Content Management.  The Associate
   Director reports to the Director, supervises a staff of 2 faculty
   librarians and 7 paraprofessionals, and provides leadership, 
management,
   and planning for all aspects of content management.  The Associate
   Director is a member of the library's senior management group,
   participates in strategic planning, facilitates teamwork throughout all
   library units, creates and implements programs, and guides staff in
   problem solving and professional development.

   Responsibilities
   *  Responsible for the successful planning, organization, policy
   development, implementation and direction of collection development,
   acquisitions, cataloging, serials, and electronic resource coordination
   in a dynamic environment with an emphasis on user-focused services
   *  Prepares and monitors the collection budget of over $1.5 million and
   engages in collection budget planning
   *  Prepares collection analysis reports and forecasts collection needs
   and trends
   *  Periodically initiates systematic reviews of the library's
   collections to ensure that the intellectual content being provided 
meets
   the library's mission and the needs of the community
   *  Analyzes and assesses the adequacy of collections and their funding
   for accreditation, program and budget reviews, and new curriculum
   proposals
   *  Leads a team of area heads in  re-designing work processes and
   services in support of learning, teaching and research
   *  Interprets and communicates collection access issues and procedures
   effectively and efficiently to patrons and library staff
   *  Participates in scholarly and service activities as required for
   library faculty status

   Qualifications
   Required:
   *  MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent
   *  Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible professional
   experience in a collections/technical services role in an academic
   library
   *  Successful leadership and supervisory experience in at least one
   major collection management area such as acquisitions, cataloging, or
   serials management
   *  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; successful project
   management skills; strong user service orientation; demonstrated
   flexibility and creativity in working with faculty, staff, and students
   *  Experience with technical services applications of a major 
integrated
   library system (ILS)

   Preferred:
   *  Creativity in the application of emerging technologies to improve
   collection management operations
   *  Experience using the Horizon ILS from Dynix
   *  Experience in a health sciences library
   *  Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals

   Salary and Benefits:  $53,000 to $70,000 based on qualifications and
   experience.  This is a non-tenure earning faculty position with an
   initial rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  Generous benefits
   include choice of medical and dental plans, 22 days of vacation, 3
   personal days, excellent state retirement including TIAA/CREF.

   Library:  The Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, 
established in
   1945, is the largest biomedical library in Alabama and one of the
   leading such libraries in the South.  It supports UAB's six health
   sciences schools (Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Nursing, Health
   Related Professions, and Optometry) and the UAB health system, and is
   expanding its programs in evidence-based medicine, consumer and patient
   health, library instruction and use of technology for effective
   practice.
