Subject: RE: Publishers catalogs: keep or toss?
From: Werner Lind <wlind_at_bluefield.edu>

Since we encourage faculty involvement in book/AV selection,
publisher's catalogs that are discipline-specific are routed upon
receipt to the appropriate faculty. General publisher's catalogs go
into a file cabinet drawer in my office (my duties include book
collection development) and about twice a year, when it gets full, I
systematically go through them and tear out sheets describing items of
interest. The catalogs are then discarded, and the tear sheets either
put in my Collection Development file or routed to appropriate faculty
for feedback. This system works well for us; the information in the
catalogs is often useful, and the twice-a-year discarding prevents
them from building up beyond our spatial capacity.

We are a small liberal arts college library, with about 700-800
students altogether. Our needs, and the practices appropriate for
meeting them, may or may not be comparable to yours.
