Curator for the John Gaw Meem Archives of Southwestern 
Architecture

The University of New Mexico Libraries has an opening for 
a Curator for the John Gaw Meem Archives of Southwestern 
Architecture. This is a full-time, 12 month faculty 
position with a desired start date of July 1, 2005. The 
faculty rank and tenure status for this position are 
negotiable appropriate to qualifications and experience. 
The salary is negotiable from a minimum of $40,000.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications
•       Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited 
Library/Information Science program.
•       A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in an 
architecture collection within a library or archive.
•       Academic background in a relevant discipline such as 
architecture, architectural history, or historic 
preservation.
•       One year public service experience.
•       Evidence of project planning, management, and completion 
of projects.

Preferred Qualifications
•       Advanced study in architecture or historic preservation.
•       Formal archival education or Academy of Certified 
Archivist certification.
•       Familiarity with current developments and trends in 
information and digital technologies and their impacts on 
architectural archives.
•       Experience in preservation of library and archival 
materials.
•       Knowledge of preservation and management of electronic 
records.
•       Experience in architectural archives collection 
development.
•       Excellent oral and written communication skills.
•       Experience developing policies and procedures.
•       Knowledge of grant writing and fund raising.
•       Excellent analytical, collaborative, and interpersonal 
skills.
•       Supervisory experience.
•       Demonstrated record of research, scholarship, 
publication and/or creative work including presentations 
and service to the profession.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
Manages the overall operations of the architectural 
collections. Responsible for the preparation of print and 
online collection finding aids.  Provides reference 
services, teaching and outreach for the CSWR/SC and 
University Libraries as appropriate.  Establishes policies 
and procedures.  Responsible for preservation assessment 
and storage decisions.  Identifies and prepares archival 
materials for digitization and Web presentation. 
 Responsible for collection development for architectural 
archives.  Serves on the John Gaw Meem Archives of 
Southwest Architecture Advisory Committee.  Participates 
in CSWR/SC leadership activities.

The CSWR/SC at the University of New Mexico University 
Libraries is a resource center for the comparative and 
interdisciplinary study of New Mexico and the Southwest. 
 The CSWR/SC supports the teaching and research mission of 
the University, as well as serving the citizens of New 
Mexico and scholars from throughout the world.  The 
CSWR/SC comprises both library collections (including 
archival materials, photographs, music and rare books) and 
the research efforts of affiliated programs.  Located in 
the historic west wing of Zimmerman Library, the CSWR/SC 
is part of the UNM University Libraries.

The University of New Mexico is a member of the 
Association of Research Libraries and the Greater Western 
Alliance, and participates in the OCLC system as a member 
of Amigos.  The UNM University Libraries contains over 2 
million volumes and includes four libraries; Centennial 
Science and Engineering, Fine Arts Library, Parish 
Memorial Library (business and economics), and Zimmerman 
Library (humanities, social science and education.)  The 
University Libraries is a regional library in the Federal 
Depository Library Program and uses Innovative Interfaces, 
Incorporated for its OPAC circulation, serials control, 
and acquisitions system.  The UNM main campus enrolls 
26,000 students and employs 3,100 faculty and 7,200 staff. 
UNM offers 92 baccalaureate degrees, 68 master’s degrees 
and 38 doctoral and professional degrees. The University 
attracts a culturally diverse student population.
