Apologies for cross posting...

The ALCTS Pre-Order Pre-Catalog Searching Discussion Group will explore the
division of pre-order and pre-searching responsibilities and improving
communication between Collection Development and Acquisitions at the 2005
ALA Midwinter meeting in Boston. Please join us!

Monday, January 17, 2:00 - 4:00 PM, HILTON BAY BACK, Westminister Room

Jacqueline Coats, Head of Monographic Acquisitions and Patricia Carey,
Assistant Head of Monographic Acquisitions at the University of Washington
Libraries, will start the discussion with the premise that effective
communication equals responsibility and that a successful acquisitions
operation is the shared responsibility of both acquisitions and collection
development staff. Along with this premise, Jackie and Patty also hold the
following views based on personal experience: 1) There is value in adding
technology whenever possible. Specifically, incorporating vendor databases
into daily selection, ordering and receiving operations are beneficial since
it allows selectors to monitor and track titles through the entire
acquisitions process. 2) As acquisitions staffs are held to schedules and
deadlines, so to must be collection development staff. 3) Acquisitions
professionals and collection development staff should serve on collection
development committees and share responsibilities for decision making. 4)
Acquisitions professionals should also serve as selectors assuming they have
relevant expertise and sufficient time.

We intend to have a lively audience participation period where interaction
between the panelist and group attendees could take place to further explore
the topic with ideas, question and solutions.

We invite anyone who would be willing to share their experiences and local
policies in this area to attend this meeting. We would like to hear from
you! If you would like to actively participate by leading a portion of the
discussion, and share specific solutions and local policies, please contact
the Chair or Vice Chair at the email addresses following this message.
