Structure of Library collections by date of publication
I took a sample of 500 items from WorldCat. To analyze the age
structure of the WorldCat population, I removed all serial or
continuing items, as well as undated items, ending up with 460 items.
We may divide the sample by century, further breaking down the 20th
century into time periods for the first half, third quarter, and
fourth quarter. The period of 1976-2000 is the largest category,
with 208 items, which is 45.2 percent of dated
non-serial/non-continuing items in the sample.
A chart showing the results for all time periods is attached
[moderator's note: CDL doesn't send attachments, so not chart
here. Sorry. J].
Separate categories are created for items that have been reproduced
in periods different from the original period of publication.
