JOB TITLE: Technical Services Manager/Acquisitions Librarian

Technical Services Manager/Acquisitions Librarian. The Bowdoin College 
Library seeks an experienced and creative leader for the position of 
Technical Services Manager/Acquisitions Librarian. As a member of the 
Library Management Team, the TS Manager/Acquisitions Librarian plays a 
substantial role in defining the strategic direction of the Library and 
works collaboratively with other managers on policy and planning, 
collection development, and resource allocation and program
implementation.

Collections comprise over 980,000 volumes, nearly 5,000 current print 
and electronic periodical subscriptions, 5000 video recordings and over 
150 databases. The Library also is a selective federal documents 
depository. The Library is committed to cooperative resource development 
with its consortial partners Colby and Bates Colleges.

Responsible for: in partnership with the Technical Services 
Manager/Catalog Librarian, overall leadership of a TS Department that is 
committed to ongoing process improvement, team-based decision-making and 
extensive cross-training; directly managing the acquisition of library 
materials in all formats, both monographic and serial, including print, 
non-print and electronic resources; maintaining financial records for 
all library materials expenditures, including general, endowed and grant 
funds; supervising bindery preservation operations; participating in the 
coordination and oversight of the Librarys collection development and 
management activities as a member of the Collections Team; providing 
guidance to librarians and faculty regarding acquisitions operations; 
serving as library contact to vendors and networks; representing 
Technical Services on CBB and other consortial committees; representing 
the Library on campus-wide committees, and participating in state and 
national professional organizations; serving as librarian liaison to 
faculty in assigned academic departments; and providing shared reference 
service and instruction to students, faculty and staff.

Essential abilities: excellent organizational, interpersonal, 
presentation, facilitation, verbal and written communication skills; the 
ability to foster a collegial work environment that encourages change 
and innovation; the ability to foster teamwork and stimulate 
cross-functional collaboration.

Required qualifications: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited library 
school; demonstrated leadership and achievement in planning and 
coordinating acquisitions technical services operations including print 
and electronic resources, continuing resources (serials); substantial 
knowledge of foreign and domestic book trade and rapidly evolving 
publishing trends; outstanding supervisory skills; excellent leadership, 
interpersonal, communication, organizational and analytical skills; a 
commitment to collaboration and ongoing process improvement; reading 
knowledge of at least one foreign language; strong service orientation 
and initiative.

Required experience: A minimum of five years of supervisory and project 
management experience in a library Technical Services Department; 
significant experience acquiring domestic and foreign library materials 
in all formats; experience with applications of technology to technical 
services practices including integrated library systems (e.g. Innovative 
Interfaces), bibliographic utilities (e.g. OCLC) and MARC format, the 
World Wide Web and other digital access technologies; experience in 
budget and strategic planning.
