POSITION:
Web Application and Database Development Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The University at Albany Libraries seeks a Web Application and
Database Development Manager (SL-4) reporting to the Head of Library
Systems. The successful candidate will develop and support web
projects that enhance access to electronic resources via the
Libraries' Web Site and online catalog.
Library Systems supports Unix and Windows servers, as well as 500 PCs,
the ALEPH library management system (Unix), web servers (Windows/IIS
5+ and SQL Server 2000 with Active Server Pages), proxy servers
(Windows/EZProxy), electronic reserves (Windows/ ERes), Interlibrary
Loan (Windows/ILLIAD), bindery (Windows/LARS), and a number of
administrative applications. The department provides training and
assistance to staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Bachelors degree including at least 12 hours of computer science
Demonstrated ability to program using Visual Basic and VBScript,
generate dynamic Web pages using ASP, create and maintain Windows
applications, design and create a SQL database using Microsoft SQL
Server or Oracle, develop web pages driven by a SQL database, program
in XHTML, CSS, XML, and XSL Excellent communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, and
to teach and assist users at all levels of computer knowledge in a
supportive manner. Willingness to learn new skills.
A demonstrated ability to work with culturally diverse people.
Preferred:
Experience maintaining a public web site, administering Microsoft IIS,
programming with Visual Studio, developing .NET applications,
programming in Perl, incorporating Javascript into web pages
Experience with library systems at an academic or special library
Familiarity with library operations

Albany's University Libraries are among the top 100 research libraries
in the United States. They are a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, serve a campus community of 17,000
full-time and part-time students and 2,300 faculty and staff and a
broader regional, national and international community. The
Libraries employ a dynamic and knowledgeable staff of 140 FTE and 200
part-time student assistants to provide excellent services to a campus
community that makes heavy demands on these services. Collections
total 2 million cataloged volumes and the Libraries offer a full
spectrum of resources, from rare books and manuscripts to an array of
electronic resources. Librarians work closely with teaching faculty
to offer an extensive program of user education and information
literacy instruction. The University Library on the main campus
is a large 175,000 square feet, 4 story building providing seats for
1,660. It is open 109 hours a week. It contains several
fully-networked library classrooms and laboratories, a 60 seat
computer user room, a large networked reference area, and an
interactive media center.
The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on
the Rockefeller College campus serves the graduate schools of Criminal
Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare and Information Science
and Policy. The New Library, opened in September 1999, on the main
campus adds 143,000 net square feet of space to the University
Libraries and houses atechnologically advanced, 400,000 volume science
library, the M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and
Archives, and the Library's Preservation Department.
The University Libraries are fully automated. Minerva, the University
Libraries' new Web-based catalog, contains information on all
cataloged holdings and is Internet accessible. The Libraries provide
an extensive array of electronic and networked resources and
Web-accessible services. They are members of the Association of
Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries. Additional
