COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Georgia State University is seeking an energetic, knowledgeable and
visionary librarian to serve as the Collection Development Officer.  The
Collection Development Officer leads in the planning and development of
collection development policies and programs.  Works closely with the
department heads of Information Services and Acquisitions in directing
and coordinating the subject liaison librarians' collection
development activities and responsibilities.  Actively participates in
vendor relations and budget management.  Keeps abreast of developments
in publishing and scholarly communications.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate evaluates the collection for currency and
relevance to the university curriculum and other collection development
goals; develops acquisition and weeding projects; advises in the
appropriate allocation and expenditure of all library material funds,
and monitors encumbrance and expenditure of the materials budget;
participates in serial and standing order selection and de-selection
activities, works with the Electronic Resources Librarian in licensing
and vendor relations;  supervises one full-time Collection Development
staff member, and works with liaisons to facilitate collection
development activities including training and interacting with faculty
regarding collection development issues;  participates in cooperative
activities among area libraries. Candidates should possess ASERL's
Competencies for Research Librarians listed at www.aserl.org.

Requirements

ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science or
Georgia Board of Regents approved MLIS. Two years collection development
experience.  Analytical and decision making skills.  Excellent oral,
written and interpersonal skills.  Experience in an academic library.
PREFERRED:  Second master's degree and liaison experience.
Demonstrated record of research and service.

Library and University Environment

Georgia State University (GSU) is a dynamic urban institution located
in downtown Atlanta with an enrollment of approximately 31,000 students.
The close relationship that exists between the university and its
surrounding business, government and cultural communities makes GSU
unique in the University System of Georgia and distinctive among
universities in the South.

The University Library houses over 1,373,800 volumes, subscribes to
more than 7,900 serials, and is a Federal Document Depository with more
than 820,000 government documents. Its growing Media Center has holdings
of approximately 21,800 audio, video, and multimedia materials. The
carefully selected collections are designed to serve varied research and
instructional needs at the undergraduate and graduate levels of the
university community. Library services are supported by the Endeavor
Voyager integrated library system. The University System of Georgia has
a statewide system known as GALILEO providing equal access to electronic
resources and other materials for libraries throughout the state. The
University Library is a member of the Association of Southeastern
Research Libraries; the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET), and the
Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education, consisting of fourteen
academic and research libraries serving nineteen institutions in the
greater Atlanta metropolitan area.

Salary and Rank

$40,000 - $46,000 for 12 months commensurate with the candidate's
experience.  Appointment at a faculty rank, on a contract renewal
basis.
