CDL-Tracking non-subscription reference annuals

Before we try and reinvent the wheel, thought I'd ask if anyone else has 
come up with a good way of tracking reference collection resources that 
appear annually, but are not subscriptions. We have quite a number of these 
titles that we either cannot afford to purchase every year because they are 
expensive.

Has anyone come up with an automated way of doing this? We've toyed with 
Access and Excel files, but they are labor intensive. Our III system 
doesn't lend itself to this type of tracking. Folks may reply to me 
personally and I will summarize responses for the list if there's interest.
