Columbus State University is an institution with enrollment of 7,000
students and
library holdings of 240,000 volumes. We are working on a project to either
store or
discard the bound journals that are duplicated in our JSTOR
access. Currently, we
have the Arts & Sciences I and Ecology & Botany JSTOR collections and we're
committed to continuing our JSTOR access as we move toward increasing our
electronic access to journals. We have a pressing need for space in our Bound
Periodicals area, and this seems to be the best way to create space fairly
quickly
without losing access to information. We know we'll have a good bit of
catalog
cleanup to do, as our JSTOR holdings are not in the OPAC yet. At this
point we are
not looking at cancelling any subscriptions or stopping binding of recent
issues but
simply weeding bound volumes for years that are currently covered in our JSTOR
collections. The bound vols. will most likely be stored at least until we
complete a
more comprehensive journal review in the spring.
I am interested in hearing from other libraries about experiences in
discarding or
storing bound volumes that are duplicated in JSTOR. What problems did you run
into? What advice would you give us? Any information you can share will
be helpful.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Susan Wynne
