The Health Sciences and Human Services Library, University of Maryland, 
Baltimore, invites candidates to apply for the following non-tenured 
faculty position.

TITLE:          Head, Collection Development Department
LOCATION:               Resources Management Division
SALARY:         Commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum 
salary $45,000.

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library, University of Maryland, 
Baltimore is seeking a committed, experienced, and innovative Head of 
Collection Development librarian to guide the Library's collections into a 
digital future. The Head of Collection Development provides coordination 
and oversight of all facets of the growth and management of the Library's 
collections. The Head of Collection Development reports to the Assistant 
Director of Resources Management and supervises a department of 4 FTE, 
managing the activities of print and digital selection, acquisitions, 
collection development, serials control, and bindery operations to support 
the academic and research needs of the campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

In addition to managing the department, the incumbent provides initiative 
and leadership in developing policies regarding the provision of resources 
for the Library, including the Library's migration from print to digital 
collections.

The Head oversees a collections budget of over $1.5 million and works 
closely with the Library Administration in the budgetary process to ensure 
funds are spent appropriately.  Working with faculty liaisons, coordinates 
all monographic, periodical, and serial acquisitions and collection 
development activities for the Library's print and digital collections to 
develop a balanced collection for all health sciences academic and research 
programs within the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The incumbent periodically initiates systematic reviews of the Library's 
collections to ensure that the intellectual content being provided meets 
the Library's mission and the needs of its community. Analyzes and assesses 
the adequacy of collections and their funding for accreditation, program 
and budget reviews, and new curriculum proposals. Works with faculty 
liaisons and the Digital Resources Librarian to establish and revise 
collection development policies and procedures, and oversees their 
implementation.

The Head plays a key role in the continuing development of our Ex Libris 
Aleph 500 consortial library system, together with others in the Library 
and in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions 
(USMAI) consortium.

The Head participates in the investigation and implementation of a digital 
repository.

The incumbent serves as the primary contact with the vendors and publishers 
of print and electronic books and journals, as well as with campus Accounts 
Payable offices for collections purchases.

The Head of Collection Development is instrumental in developing Requests 
for Proposals or Invitations for Bid for monograph vendors, journal 
subscription agents, and bindery services; works with the campus 
Procurement office to evaluate proposals received and select vendors; 
evaluates vendor performance.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

MLS from ALA-accredited library school; a minimum of 3 years experience 
related to acquisitions and serials management both in print and digital 
formats, including: supervisory experience; budgetary analysis and 
development; demonstrated ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative 
data regarding library collections; experience with an integrated library 
system and bibliographic utility; the building and fostering of positive 
faculty relations; effective analytical, interpersonal, and organizational 
skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of US 
and foreign publishing industry and licensing issues, and a thorough 
understanding of the current trends emerging in scholarly publishing.

QULAIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

Experience in an academic health sciences library; experience with the Ex 
Libris Aleph 500 integrated library system's acquisitions and serials 
control modules; experience with OCLC and MARC21 formats; involvement in 
professional activities.
