Greetings from Central Texas.
I work with 73 public libraries in Central Texas that range in size from
one
serving over 600,000 residents to one serving under 400. What they do
with
paperbacks depends a lot on what kind of paperback.
Non-fiction paperbacks are cataloged and shelved with the non-fiction.
If a
library has the money for perma-binding or plastic covers, they usually
do
this type of reinforcing only for non-fiction paperbacks.
Mass-market paperbacks (romance novels, science fiction, mysteries,
etc.)
are frequently treated differently. Some are cataloged, but most are
not.
Some libraries have an exchange table or shelf, and a patron can bring
in 5
& take 10, or bring in 20 & take 3. All the library staff does is count
the
number going out the door. Some libraries keep the mass market
paperbacks on
rotating racks by genre. These are usually in the library's catalog with
a
brief record.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
Cordially,
