Eastern Connecticut State University, Connecticut’s public 
liberal arts university, has three tenure-track librarian 
positions available in the J. Eugene Smith Library.
The Smith Library is a modern, attractive, state of the art 
facility which opened in 1999, and serves a campus 
population of approximately 5,000 students.

Required for all positions: an ALA accredited Master’s in 
Library Science or its international equivalent. Preferred: 
An additional advanced degree in a subject

Access Services Librarian Assistant Librarian’s rank. Participate 
in planning, coordinating, and managing operations of circulation, 
reserves (including electronic
reserves), interlibrary loan, and other resource sharing services.
Manage student assistants. Provide reference desk service as scheduled
6-8 hours per week. Serve
as a liaison to an academic department for purposes of 
collection/resource development and user education. Report to the 
Head of Public and Research Services.
Required: Knowledge and experience with electronic information 
resources and comfortable with new information technology. 
Familiarity and experience with an
integrated library system. Supervisory experience. Oral and 
written communication skills. Teamwork, and the ability to 
work effectively and harmoniously with
faculty, staff, students, and community members.  Desired: 
College/research library experience. Experience in marketing 
programs in promoting library use. 
Experience in reference/information services.  Experience in 
conducting use and user studies. Anticipated start date: 
Nov. 1, 2004


Head of Technical Services. Assistant or Associate Librarian’s 
rank dependent on knowledge and experience. Coordinate the 
planning and operations of
technical services areas in Acquisitions, Cataloging, and 
Preservation. Plan, propose, implement, and evaluate various 
new technological applications in the technical
services area. Support assessment initiatives and grant writing. 
Serve as a member of the Administrative Team, advising the Library 
Director on all aspects of
Library management and operations. Report to the Director of 
Library Services.

Required: Demonstrated competence, and relevant experience, 
in technical services in a college, university, or research library. 
Significant experience in integrated
library systems, budget management, and personnel administration. 
Strong supervisory skills. Ability to work well and accurately with 
detail. Excellent organizational,
interpersonal, presentation, facilitation, verbal and written 
communication skills. Ability to foster a collegial work environment 
that encourages change and innovation;
and ability to interact effectively and work productively, 
collegially, cooperatively, and collaboratively with a variety of 
individuals and groups in a complex and
rapidly changing environment. Ability to view issues from a 
Library-wide perspective, foster teamwork, and stimulate cross-
functional collaboration. Proficiency with
Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and Access. 
Desired: At least five years professional experience in Technical 
Services. Strong background in
Cataloging, including serials cataloging. Experience in conducting 
assessment analysis/evaluation. Preservation experience. Innovative 
Interfaces Inc. experience.
SCT Banner system experience. Anticipated start date: Dec. 1, 2004

Reference Librarian; Assistant Librarian rank. Actively participate 
in staffing the Reference Desk. Assist the Information Literacy 
Librarian in developing
instructional materials for classroom or online delivery. Actively 
participate in the delivery of the library’s instruction program. 
Participate in the library’s
Liaison/Builder program for collection development. Report to the 
Head of Public and Research Services.

Required: A strong service orientation. Experience in providing 
reference services and library instruction. Experience working in 
an online integrated library system
environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
Ability to work well with colleagues and students. Desired: Academic 
library experience. Substantial
information literacy experience. Knowledge of presentation/authoring 
software. Anticipated start date: Jan. 1, 2005
