We're planning to start ordering plenty of music CDs as our School of Music
recently added a new masters program. So far, the vendors I've done business
with have focused on supplying books or videos. To acquire CDs, I've only
heard of the Music Library Service Company. Do any of you have an opinions
about this, or other, vendors who supply music CDs?

Thanks,

I would recommend the Berkshire Music Outlet
(<http://www.broinc.com>www.broinc.com) because of price and the large
selection. They sell cut-outs (discontinued CDs and DVDs,) which often were
available only in Europe. They do not carry currently available items. I
personally have been a customer from the days in the late 1970's when I
would drive over the Berkshires to browse through their records and then go
hear a concert at Tanglewood.

They keep improving their search engine, which now is quite usable.

We began ordering CDs about 3 years ago when our music department moved
their collection to the library. I have ordered from MLSC several times and
have been very happy with their service. Compact Disc Source out of
Wilmette, IL is another major CD vendor that I use. They provide an
educational discount and are a pleasure to work with. The Electric Fetus
out of Minneapolis generally provides discounts when ordering 3 or more CDs
and periodically offer additional discounts throughout the year. I also
order from Amazon, Double-Time Jazz, and Overstock.com.

Check out
Arkivmusic.com <http://www.arkivmusic.com>http://www.arkivmusic.com

small company ... still personal ... po's for institutions ... 3-5%
discount for orders over $100 ... they have access to all domestic
distributors and also domestic importers, and seem to be able to order
themselves from abroad.

Good luck,

I can vouch for the service provided by Music Library Service Co. as being
very good. They have a web-based online ordering tool that's actually built
for the way librarys work; i.e. the "selector" can create a list of items
desired for purchase, and then forward that to their acquisitions unit, and
they can go in and place the orders.

We've also ordered CDs from HB Direct
(<http://www.hbdirect.com>www.hbdirect.com), and from Theodore Front
(<http://www.tfront.com>www.tfront.com).
Other CD vendors with whom I have no experience, but who advertised in the
Music Library Assoc. journal "Notes" this past year, are:
A/V Source (<http://www.cdsourceinc.com>www.cdsourceinc.com)
Rhinebeck Records (no website, email at
<mailto:rhinebeckrecords_at_compuserve.com>rhinebeckrecords_at_compuserve.com
Gary Thal Music (no website; phone 212-288-4126)

Another interesting place to look for stuff is Berkshire Record Outlet,
which primarily handles remaindered/out of print CDs, but also sometimes
gets shipments of current stuff.

Hope this is helpful
