Librarian for Western Europe (Germanic emphasis)

Harvard University seeks nominations and applications of accomplished and
creative individuals for the Librarian for Western Europe (Germanic
emphasis). The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for
collection development and related services for the Germanic linguistic
area within the Widener Library. This position carries primary
responsibility for collection development and related services for Germanic
linguistic area within Widener Library. The Librarian for Western Europe
(Germanic emphasis) functions in close collaboration with other
bibliographers in the Collection Development Department. Develops and
manages the Library's Germanic and related Western European collections in
the humanities and social sciences. Specific tasks include selection of
library materials; consultation on preservation issues; analysis and
evaluation of collections in terms of coverage, format, and distribution
among Harvard's libraries. Oversees approval plans; manages unit's budget;
consults and collaborates with other library units, academic departments,
faculty and other users; continuously engages with remote resources and
with cooperative initiatives for access; cultivates close working
relationships with representatives of the booktrade and with overall
community of information providers. This position reports to the Head of
Collection Development.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Western European Studies and MLS from an ALA accredited degree
program are strongly preferred. Knowledge of Western Europe's booktrade and
publishing patterns, and a minimum of eight years experience in collection
development in an academic research library, are required. Fluency in both
written and spoken German is essential. Exposure to MS Office Suite is
required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to
work collaboratively to plan for library services and the ability to manage
resources effectively to achieve goals is also required.
Compensation:
Harvard University offers a competitive program of benefits. Appointment
salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
