Any "formula" such as this can get very tricky and
complex--circulation, number of majors, number of professors, cost of
materials, etc. Also, is there separate "gift" money available for
History (we have a fund which can only be used for American History).
There really is no single "right" answer. The critical thing is to
create a formula or derive a percentage which everyone concerned
believes is fair.

If you really have to have some one thing fast, I would consider
circulation activity. Some disciplines use libraries more than others.
What percentage of your total circulation is from D-E-F? If you can
extract that data, it's understandable, replicable, and reasonably
defensible.

Subject: CDL: History dept allocation.

To all members,

My director has asked me to find information about the
percentage of your book budgets that you allocate for history.
If you allocate in that manner, please let me know as soon as
possible as he needs the information quickly. We are a private,
Catholic college with approx. 2000 students so libraries of a
similar makeup would be the most useful. Any help would be
appreciated!

Thanks,

Tony
