Collection Development Librarian for the Humanities and Applied Arts
Responsibilities and duties:
The Appalachian State University Libraries seek an energetic,
visionary, and resourceful librarian for the recently-restructured
position of Collection Development Librarian for the Humanities and
Applied Arts. The successful candidate will be responsible for
ensuring a strong and appropriate collection in all formats supporting
the teaching and research mission of select departments and programs,
including History, English, Philosophy & Religion, Theatre & Dance,
film studies, architecture, photography, crafts, and interior design.
Duties include active collegial contribution to the Collection
Development Team, strong outreach to departmental faculty, collection
analysis and management, participation in budget management and policy
development, and involvement in reference and instruction.
This is a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position with
attendant expectations of excellence in librarianship and
participation in service and scholarship. The position will be filled
at the rank of assistant professor. A second advanced degree is

Qualifications:
Required: American Library Association masters degree and a second
advanced degree; a background in History or English either by academic
preparation or through prior library selection experience; excellent
spoken and written communication skills; interest in working in a team
environment; evidence of ability to work independently and
collegially; interest in working in individual and group instructional
contexts; two or more years of academic library experience at the
professional or paraprofessional level.
Preferred: Bachelors or advanced degree in History or English; prior
experience in academic library collection development. Experience or
training in a multi-cultural environment. The Library strongly

over $2 million and there are 35 faculty and 40 staff positions.

periodicals, over 4,700 current periodical, newspaper, and serial
titles, 1.4 million microforms, and a significant commitment to
electronic resources. Appalachian is a constituent institution of The
University of North Carolina, a member of SOLINET, and a member of the
Western North Carolina Library Network, a consortium of three state
universities sharing an Innovative Interfaces, Inc. system and
inter-university document delivery.
