CLOSE DATE: March 1, 2004 ABOUT DEPT: The University of California, now comprising ten campuses, has a long history of collaborative library planning and activities. Amongst its assets are a robust resource sharing infrastructure, two regional library facilities with shared governance, a twenty-year old union catalog, substantial shared digital collections and services, and an established organizational infrastructure for planning, policy, and decision-making. The Shared Print program is a highly innovative new venture of the UC libraries. Envisaged as a 2-3 year pilot exercise, the Programs continuation will depend on its perceived value to the University and its libraries. RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Assoc. Vice Provost for Systemwide Library Planning/Executive Director California Digital Library and consulting regularly with the University Librarians, the Director for Shared Print Collections will be responsible for planning, development, implementation, and management of shared print collections (The University of California Libraries Collection) in an environment of shared governance. In addition, the Director will coordinate the development of print repositories for JSTOR journals and possibly for other partners. The Director will lead systemwide planning efforts to develop and implement shared print collections in consultation with library, administrative, and faculty groups. The incumbent will identify and collaboratively resolve policy issues relating to identification of candidate collections, sources of collections, processing, bibliographic control, preservation, access and service. The Director for Shared Print Collections will play a major national and international role in presenting the progress of this ambitious new program, building national and international partnerships (for example, with other library consortia), and securing grants and other external funding for the program. The Director will develop a budget and a planning/budgeting framework for UC shared print collection development and operational support and provide oversight and direction for dispersed staff responsible for receipt, processing, bibliographic control, and housing of shared print collections. The incumbent will also work closely with CDLs digital preservation and other technical staff to develop innovative services to complement and support shared print collections and services. The Director will develop innovative communication mechanisms to involve librarians, faculty, and administrators in the development and operation of the shared print collection and will serve as a resource for senior librarians. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: M.L.I.S. or equivalent Considerable in-depth experience in a variety of aspects of academic librarianship with emphasis on collection development and technical services. Strong interest and knowledge of technical services, resource sharing, and preservation of print collections. Demonstrated success as an innovative leader with senior level librarians and faculty. Clear understanding of the scholarly use of library collections and services, an awareness of trends in higher education and library services, and strong interest in, and knowledge of, the interrelationship of digital and print collections. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups, including both faculty and librarians, to build consensus for new and innovative programs. Excellent interpersonal skills, political acumen, and ability to provide leadership in a dynamic environment. Demonstrated ability both to plan and to implement new services and collections. Strong analytical ability. Superior oral and written communication skills. Desired: Experience in University of California or other consortial libraries. Demonstrated ability to raise and manage funds from external sources and to integrate externally funded activities with operational programs. Demonstrated project management abilities.
