                DIRECTOR OF COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
                 
                Gettysburg College Library invites applications for 
a service-oriented librarian to head its Collection Development 
Department.  Librarians with three or more years experience in an 
academic library are encouraged to apply.  

                Musselman Library is a dynamic organization where 
every staff member makes a difference.  We serve a small, liberal 
arts community of 2,500 students. We are looking for a librarian 
who can get excited about building collections to support new programs 
and offer leadership in existing subject areas.  Some recent 
initiatives at Gettysburg College include new programs in Civil 
War Era Studies, Biochemistry, Environmental Studies, Italian, Asian 
Studies, and Film Studies.  We recently received a multi-million 
dollar gift to establish a Conservatory of Music. (See:

                 This is a senior management position which provides 
vision and leadership in all areas of collection development.  The 
Director of Collection Development will guide the formulation of 
collection policies and coordinate the activities of the library 
liaisons.  
This position works closely with the Acquisitions Librarian in the 
allocation of a $1.2 million materials budget and will evaluate and 
select library resources in all formats to support a wide range of 
undergraduate programs.
                 
                The Director of Collection Development will oversee 
the library gift program, manage the library approval plans and 
collection endowments, perform liaison work with selected 
departments and be responsible for collection maintenance, 
inventory and long range planning for space allocation.  The 
position will lead preservation initiatives, serve on library and/or 
college-wide committees, and benefit from numerous continuing 
education and professional development opportunities.  
                 
                This position reports to the Director of the Library 
and includes supervision of four FTE staff with oversight of 
interlibrary loan, reserves and media selection. 
                 
                 
                Qualifications
                 
                        *       ALA-accredited master's degree in l
ibrary or information science and three or more years of relevant 
work experience. 
                        *       Supervisory experience. 
                        *       Collection development in an academic 
library, preferably in a liberal arts setting. 
                        *       Knowledge of traditional and 
electronic resources. 
                        *       Understanding of scholarly 
communication patterns and needs of a scholarly clientele. 
                        *       Strong customer service orientation. 
                        *       Ability to work flexibly and creatively. 
                        *       Ability to work independently and as 
part of a team. 
                        *       Effective communication, interpersonal, 
organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. 
                        *       Knowledge or interest in foreign 
languages preferred.
