The Paul V. Galvin Library of the Illinois Institute of Technology 
invites applications for the position of Science 
Bibliographer/Librarian.  The Galvin Library seeks an energetic and 
creative individual who will provide high-level research assistance 
and instruction to students and faculty in the physical, chemical, 
and life sciences and in selected engineeering programs.

Basic Function:

This position has primary responsibilities for evaluation and 
selection of science and engineering print and electronic 
information resources.
Provides science and engineering reference support, bibliographic
instruction, and participates in planning and developing information
services for science and engineering students and faculty.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

•       Serve as a bibliographer and subject specialist to designated 
science and engineering departments; utilize subject background to 
assist and direct other bibliographers in selection of information 
resources; participate in the provision of services to students and 
faculty, and pro-actively develop and maintain good relations with 
faculty.

•       Participate in the selection and weeding of print and 
electronic resources in assigned science and engineering subject 
areas; maintain and manage areas of library websites related to 
assigned subject and service specialties; make recommendations and 
provide assistance as requested in other collection development and 
evaluation activities, and monitor appropriate portions of
the acquisitions budget.

•       Provide reference desk services, assist science and 
engineering faculty, students, and other users seeking information, 
offer research assistance and guide users in the effective use of a 
broad range of information resources;
perform online searching upon request; may require some evening and
weekend
duty.

•       Provide individual in-depth consultation on information
resources and
information retrieval and storage techniques and their importance to
research, scholarship, and education to students and faculty.

•       Assist Instruction Coordinator in identifying instruction needs
and
developing workshops of appropriate information resources and
information
retrieval and storage techniques; deliver workshops to individuals,
classes
and other groups.

•       Recommend science and engineering electronic resources in all
formats;
test and evaluate new Internet resources and databases; train users and
staff; compile feedback from users

•       Participate as a member of the Public Services team in planning,
policy
formulation, grant writing, identifying and recommending new information
resources and services, training other library personnel, interacting
with
patrons and the university community in a professional manner.

•       Keep abreast of new librarianship issues and participate in 
professional activities and organizations.

•       Supervise and train 1-3 student assistants.

•       Perform other professional duties as assigned.

•       Maintain a service attitude that improves user perceptions and 
participate in campus activities.

•       Demonstrate a high level of understanding librarianship and 
the information industry, and stay abreast of developments in the field.

Required Qualifications:

•       An MLS from an ALA-accredited library school, a bachelor’s 
or higher degree in the physical or life sciences.

•       Demonstrated knowledge of the literature and databases in 
science and engineering. Experience in use of technology to enhance 
learning, knowledge of issues relating to science and engineering 
research. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of 
research and publications;

•       Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills,
initiative,
flexibility and the ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing
environment, and the ability to quickly adapt to and learn new methods 
of seeking information without extensive training.

•       A commitment to providing services to a diverse user population.

•       A minimum of 2 years experience in a science/engineering, 
academic or special library environment is preferred.

Salary and Conditions of Employment:
Salary will be competitive and based on qualifications. TIAA CREF 
and other retirement plans are offered, as are variety of health 
plans. Fifteen days vacation, sick leave, and tuition remission 
is available for employees and immediate family.
