Readers are invited to contribute articles to the "Biz of Acq" column
of Against the Grain.
Against the Grain is a down-to-earth, practice-oriented library
journal that treats acquisitions questions with a light touch. Its
goal is to provide acquisitions librarians in all types of libraries,
and information sellers, with current information on events in the
field, and practical insights into acquisitions techniques and
processes. The "Biz of Acq" column features discussions of key
acquisitions topics by working librarians.
Ideas for upcoming "Biz of Acq" articles include:
· Cross-product comparisons (e.g. ILS products, or e-journal
management systems)
· ILS migrations and their problems for acquisitions departments.
· Making advance payments to vendors -- questions of accounting,
internal and external auditing, financial risks, legal restrictions.
· Merging acquisitions and serials departments -- staffing,
supervision, combining functions, cross-training, handling of print
and electronic formats.
· The place of the acquisition department in the library --
compare sizes and types of libraries considering classification
levels
of personnel, size of departments, what functions are shared with
which other departments.
· Acquisitions personnel -- job titles, salaries, classification
levels, career progression for librarians and support staff.
· Effects of outsourcing on acquisitions functions.
Feel free to choose any of these topics, or one of your own.
Theoretical articles, research reports, "how-to" articles and opinion
pieces are welcome. Article length should be approximately 1200-1500
words (4-5 pages). Contributions may be written by individuals or
co-authored.
